Removal of surfactants
Jul 13th, 2002, 1:12am

Can anyone give me some information on how to treat or remove surfactants from a wastewater of laundry operation? Is chemical treatment enough or shall be combined with biological process?

I have read surfactants are biologically degradable, is it true? Please advise.

Thanks!

Dear Mr. Lateral,

Surfactants differ in biodegradability. In laundary detergents surfactants used should be readily biodegradable. Some detergent formulations contain ethoxylated alkylphenols or nonlinear alkylated benzene sulfonates which are degraded to more recalcitrant parent compounds. You may combine biological removal with sorption. Adjustment of the pH to neutral levels may be necessary.

Kind regards
