Aelosoma in RAS and mixed liquor
Jul 25th, 2002, 2:46pm

Hi Everyone,

We have a infestation of Aelosoma, those red-spotted bristle worms.  Our effluent solids are increasing, ammonia is high, >2.0 mg/l.  We are a 2.0 MGD diffused aeration plant discharging to ground.  No significant industrial users on sewer line.  The aelosomas turn the top of the settled RAS samples orangy-red after sitting for awhile.  We are wasting heavily to get rid of them, however, they get into the filtrate (gravity belt) and are returned to aeration.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.  Ann Mastroianni  Barnstable MA

Ann:

Aelosoma is a transient organism normally found in paper/lumber treatment plants (high SRT as well as having more placid environment) and more than likely was introduced into your plant through the influent.  From what I have seen it will stay in your system between 6-12 months and the concentration will gradually decline.  Also, the solids inventory will decrease by a third and up to a half of your normal operation.  Aelosoma will consume the exterior portion of you flocs (which is a good thing since the exterior of your floc is what is exposed to the environment and suffers the most from toxins and chemicals--just think about grazing sheep)  Depending on the SRT of your system (if it is long then Aelosoma will stay for a longer period of time).  Aeration basins are not a permanent home for Aelosoma.

We had a similar problem on start-up of a new facility when the contractor unwittingly diluted our influent with potable water.  We assumed the lower F/M ratio contributed, since they went away after a few weeks.  Have not had any problems since.  You may want to try chlorinating the filtrate to remove them faster, but be careful, in jar testing we noticed they leave a tint behind when exposed to hypochlorite.
