How to measure Density of anaerobic granules?
May 03rd, 2004, 4:47am

Is there any comparatively accurate method to measure the density of anaerobic granules? ???

As you know, granules is an irregular surface rough sphere. So obiously hard to measure it's volumn.

In addtion, the wet weight of granules also hard to determine.

Thus, may i ask if there is any method to measure the density? ???

Dear Wilfred,

density of cellulose, proteins are all very close to a value of 1.5 g/cm³. So you might calculate with this value!
To measure density of granules pycnometer method is very suitable and precise. Take care to remove air bubbles.
First you have to establish the relation between 'wet' and dry weight.

Kind regards

Dear T. Sobisch :

If I am not mistatken, the pycnometer method require either wet weight or wet volumn to be known. But I feel both of them hard to measure. Do you think so? ???

Dear Wilfred,

what you need to know is volume of pycnometer, mass of granules (dry mass or wet mass and relation between the two), mass of water (difference of entire mass and mass of dry granules).
