Sludge dewatering performance
Nov 29th, 2005, 12:44pm

Hello: Wink

I have a screw press with gravity table in order to dewatering 15 bdt/day wood fiber sludge from 1% to 40% with cationic polymer.
Sludge is coming from primary DAF. Effluent is coming from integrated mechanical/newsprint mill.

I am going to install a secondary treatment (just MBBR without sludge recirculation) and I am going to add 10 bdt/day of secondary sludge to screw press. Sludge will come from new secondary DAF (3%)

Screw press is designed to dewater 45 bdt/day of primary sludge.

I dont now how much expected about dewatering sludge . below 30%, 35%??

Could you help me? Thanks in advance,

Anibal Pacheco

Dear Anibal Pacheco,

40 % solids sounds relatively high. Unfortunately, dewaterability is very much influenced by the actual sludge composition/properties, not only by the right flocculant. For ordinary wastewater sludge I would expect values above 30 % for the best case.
At the end you will see it during field trials and may be you can report it to the forum.

Kind regards

Dear T. Sobisch:

Yes, 40% is higher than others sludge, but our primary sludge comes from wood fiber rejects in papermachines and woodyard.
Some literature showed good performance of dewatering (screw presses) in sludges from 0% to 30% of secondary sludges.
In the future, there would be good to keep our present % solid in order to dont have problem to burn it.

We will see ¡¡

Regards,

Anibal

Really recycling and water conservation is must for saving water on earth. I think this would be the correct steps to conservation of water.

concerning the dewatering sludge process can anyone please tell me how can I compute the polyelectrolyte dosing in kg/TDS?

Thanks

I completely agree with Sobisch. 30% is the most that you can get but I know some tricks to improve sludge de-watering in paper mills through mixing of the biological sludge  with the sludge produced in cold lime softening process of raw water. Then I was able to cut the flocculant application by replacing the mid cationic  flocculant with very low Cationis to very low Anionic.
Another trick is to use structured flocuulant instead of liner ones. For example Nalco 71300, Nalco71302, Nalco 713004.
