How to reduce BOD and COD levels in the slaughterh
Feb 20th, 2006, 5:59am

Hello to the experts. I am searching for the right answer on how to decrease the BOD from 200 to an allowable 50 in our slaughterhouse with a wastewater flowrate of 1liter per second in the discharge pond. Our wastewater tretment facilities is composed of one grease trap, two lifting stations (4x4m), one anaerobic pond (200 sq.m.), one facultative pond (2000 sq.m.) and one discharge pond (1000sq m.) the anaerobic pond is 20 ft deep, while the all the rest is 6 ft deep. The facultative pond is planted with water lilies for 10 years already. W e use chlorine, 3 kilos per day , for sanitation purposes inside the abbatoir.
our COD is also high at 200 while the city's standard count is only 100. Please enlighten me  on my problem. thanks a lot and more power.

Hi Josddreamer,

You are the perfect candidate for aeration. Reducing BOD from 200mg/L to 50 mg/L is generally not a problem, depending on retention time, temperature, pH, etc... Increasing the treatment capacity of your pond is the best way to keep your maintenance cost down. I also noticed you have deep ponds (>6 feet deep), which will give you excellent oxygen transfer with the adequate aeration equipment.
PNW specializes in aeration systems for lagoons. We have also developed an Advance Microbial Treatment System (AMTS) which can make you reach BOD, TSS and Ammonia levels of 10 mg/L, 15mg/L and 5 mg/L respectively.
If you would like us to show you what we can do for you, contact us at: denwil@gorge.net.

Use the DAF must be better. You can reduce the BOD down to 40% after DAF.

Just curious, why is the effluent of a slaughter house have such a low BOD load? Shouldn't it be looking like about 1000 to 2500 mg/l?
