Acronyms, Initials, Shortcuts
Jan 17th, 2009, 5:12pm

I learn quite a bit from the use of this forum but I am quite bothered by the constant use of acronyms.  That is, the initials of a process, product, procedure that seems to be quite prevalent among all industries.  For example, SBR=Sequencing Batch Reactor.  In the case of wastewater, water treatment most of us are accustomed to the use of these terms.  In many ways, I think we are obligated to the general public (which may at times visit this Forum) to somehow/someway be better communicators of the technologies, problems, successes in this industry but make everyone aware that the ultimate purpose of our jobs is to clean the environment and to do it in a professional manner.   That is, make ourselves easier to understand.  If you use an acronym, try your best to spell it out.  There, that is one of my pet peeves.

Victor,

I appreciate the point you are trying to make here as well as the perspective you bring. I respect as I'm sure all who are regulars to the forum do, the intelligent and thoughtful persective you have provided on numerous occasions. You are very generous when it comes ot assisting others in the forum with the volume of knowledge you posses but I must disagree with part of what you are saying. I feel that we in the forum communicate better via the acronyms, they are every bit a part of "our" vocabulary as the acronyms used by flight controllers in Mission Control at NASA.  I don't think you would expect them to "spell it out" every time they have a conversation. I'm not trying to "nitpick" the point you make just responding. As I said I feel that we have certain acronyms that allow us to communicate in an effective manner, I understand that those who have no knowledge of our industry are NOT going to understand them but then again how many people outside the industry are going to be involved in the forum? I also  understand your point about being better communicators to the outside, but in those cases I can see where educating them will enable them to understand the severity of "need" we have in the industry. In closing I am just pointing out my perspective of the thread, not trying to bash it. I am interested to hear your response.

ADI has MBR,MBBR, AS, BNR, SBR, BVF, AnMBR, BMR technologies to treat COD, BOD, TSS, TKN, TP, VOC contaminants.  We use a combination of SRT, HRT, SLR, OLR, VLR, T, F:M, TA, VA, PA, AOR, DO and ORP to control these technologies.  To make it worse, at ADI I am known as PJM.

I see where you are coming from Victor, or should I say VSC.  I will try to change ASAP FYI.

LOL Cheesy

Actually, when I first started surfing the internet the acronym LOL came up often.  I was ignorant so I had to look it up.

You've convinced me Victor! I am certainly not familiar with all of the acronyms used in our industry and I've had to consult Google at times to understand them. In writing at work I'm required to spell it out the first time with the acronym in parentheses and I'll try to remember to do this for the Forum.

Post Script (PS): This is an example Cool

Maybe Joe would consider a sticky note thread ("important topics") called Frequently used names and acronyms.  He would be in charge of what went on it (or he would find one of those ten beautiful faces at the top to volunteer).  Maybe even a web link for some of them.

It could have a link to the Nevada Water Words Dictionary which has a good acronym list.  It isn't a perfect list since neither PAC is in the list.

I hear you Victor, but I'm thinking for those times people just forget or in a case like COD, we don't want to risk mispelling it (oxgyen), a sticky thread would be backup.

Dear all,

I agree it is sometime hard to always keep in mind to spell it out. Maybe a compromise to try to spell it out one time as required in good scientific papers. To be onest it is a type of ignorance, though mostly not intentionally.
I often have problems to understand the posts if full of acronyms. Often even one is enough to be unsure what is meant. Sometimes confusion is generated with acronyms with more then one meaning like PAC (polyaluminum chloride or powdered activated carbon).
We all will benefit from time to time if the posters will handle the acronyms carefully.

Victor, by the way, I am not familiar with what is meant by 'one of my pet peeves' Maybe in German 'Steckenpferd' ?

Kind regards
T. Sobisch

Sobisch:

You bring up another interesting point.  The use of the vernacular.  There are sayings, idioms, phrases that are regional and what makes sense for someone in the US it means nothing to someone in the UK, Australia...  Take for example, "break a leg".  In the US, it means "good luck".  How can it be good luck when I break my leg?  It makes no sense whatsoever!  But to know the origin of the phrase it makes quite a bit of sense.  I will not go into the details but it comes from the entertainment industry, dancing, performance...  A pet peeve is a "recurring source of irritation".  Of course, the continual use of acronyms is that it irritates me.

I hear you Dr. Henry.  Try spelling vacuum!

Nevertheless,

it happens in German one wishes 'Hals- und Beinbruch' (neck and legbreak) .. 'all the best' and it comes from skiing not from wastewater treatment at all

I hear (read) the thoughts and posts to this thread and respectfully I can see the points being made, but (respectfully) this is starting to get a little too (Politically correct: PC) FOR ME.

Ones irritations don't make it an irritant for all.

Dr. Henry has a good point and suggestion, one that I think Mr. Taylor our esteemed leader will give respective/reflective thought too and give us his response.

Dr. Sobisch, the (PAC) example is a very good one where confusion can arise.

Joe; any thoughts????

Thanks for the vine, I am out!!!!

Wow....!!!!
This could be mighty craic. (craic = local term for fun)
Just take an ocassional butchers hook (look), and keep the mince pies (eyes) peeled for more.
I suppose this is another form of language... maybe even a form of 'c..p rap'.
If in doubt ask... it can minimise errors.
