Settleable Solids Testing
Jun 23rd, 2010, 11:40am

I work in an Environmental Testing Lab and we frequemtly get in sludge samples for Settleable Solids testing from water companies.  We have tried to explain that this test is not designed for such matrices, but they keep requesting it anyway.

Does anyone know of a site where I could find a reference to the limitations of perfoming this test on a sample of say pond sediment.  I would like to refer my clients to it.

Standard Methods, in 2540F 1., discusses settleable solids.  "Settleable solids in surface and saline waters as well as domestic and industrial wastes may be determined and reported on either a volume (mL/L) or a weight (mg/L) basis.

Working hard to bring reason to the field of regulation.

it does specifically address how to do settleable solids on a sludge though - like something with 7% solids where when you pour the sample into a cylinder, you can't see the water column - the particles are very fine.  Some settling may occur but impossible to read.

Dear Helen Geoghegan,

though standard settling test at earth gravity is not feasible you might do a characterization in graduated centrifuge tubes at defined centrifugation time and acceleration.

Kind regards

It is not unusual for regulatory agencies to require tests for parameters that might NOT make sense given the sample matrix.  In California, for instance, the level of common sense of regulatory personnel is (unfortunately) not increasing.
