Low BOD high COD
Jan 03rd, 2011, 3:42am

i just came up with low BOD and high COD from the client.
need to design the ETP for pepsi beverage industry.
BOD= 96ppm
COD=2816ppm
Inflow=350m^3/day
we usually prapose our clients MBBR technology,but this situation dos'nt seem fit for ...
do we need some chemical treatment befor feeding to ASP.
please provide me the soloution

H

first up, I would get the figures verified ! This seems an amazingly low BOD for a beverage waste.

regards
Alistair

Dear Mr. Alamar,
i surprised when i see the report.
The Lab analysis Report shown by client:
PH value =5.3 Test method:APHA 4500 H+
COG ppm = 2361 Test Metod : APH 5220 B
BOD ppm = 92 Test Method : APH 5210 B
TDS dried @ 180 deg C PPM = 709 APHA 2540 C
TSS dried @ 103-105 deg C = 365 Test Method: APHA 2540 C
oil & grease not found
this is first time i come across the situation.
if the case will be ,what wil be our design considerations .......

Dear EECSA
in this case, high cod may occur due to many oxidizing material content in waste

Those are unusual results for normally the correlation between BOD and TSS is pretty close to 1:1.  Here you have over 300 for TSS and yet BOD is less than 100.  I would do some additional sampling and analysis to verify these results that you have posted.

This must be diet Pepsi. Even the bugs can not digest it. I would get another sample and have it analyzed at a couple labs for comparison. With a specific organic compound there might be a need to look at the seed material. Fresh raw sewage from a treatment plant should indicate what will happen at the treatment plant. Evaluating the raw data for the BOD analysis might help interpretation of results as to any toxicity.

While you are retesting, try running BOD10 & BOD20. The waste may still be biodegradable, but require acclimation. Also, try BOD5 on a filtered sample as the solids may be affecting the COD.

You have already taken the hint that re-testing is appropriate.  What I cannot understand is why you thought that taking one sample for designing a new WWTP was appropriate and then asking design questions based around this.

Does the plant run 24/7, is it a batch process, how does the plant run through the working day?  These are questions that need also be asked.  Start a sampling and analysis program (over a number of weeks) that will give you the information required to best determine what exactly is the effluent make up from the plant, then start thinking of what is the best process to treat such a stream.  You will also need the discharge permit criteria as well, as you will know all about the start point (incoming effluent characteristics) but you need to know what the end point will be - the discharge consent.  Hey presto you might just design a suitable plant meeting your client's expectations!
