problem with rotifers
Oct 20th, 2011, 7:06am

Hi,

Maybe it silly but i have problem with rotifers....
we activated new WWTP, everything was ok, the activated sludge was perfect, last week i done microbiology analisyss, and i couldn't believe what I saw.
i checked few times, there was more than 150 rotifers on every slide.
I know that rotifers are very helpful, but they are eating  a lot of activated sludge bacteria, and i'm afraid that the bacteria will disapper soon. At the moment, the sludge concentration is 1,2kg/m3, was 4,3 kg/m3.
what can we do to get rid of rotifers???

thanks a lot.  Smiley

Magda:

Rotifers are filter feeders and consume large quantities of single celled bacteria, yeast, alga, detritus but are not know for consuming flocs unless they are small in size to fit through their stoma (opening).  What size are your flocs, do you have dispersed cells, are your flocs being sheared?

Hi,

the flocs are sheared and small with very weak strukture. Rotifers in many cases are inside the flocs, don't know what is the cause that the sludge concentration is so low.
SVI is ok, i have lot's of zooglea's monocolony.

in some places i foud "familis" of Rotifers, small, medium and large in number of 15.

the sludge stoped remove phosphorus. Sad

maybe temperature will solve the problem, we have less than 5 centigrade at night.

I recommend sending a split sample to someone to confirm your findings. If you'd like, you can PM me and I'll give you some mailing info- I wouldn't charge you to look at it- you'd just have to pay to get it through customs etc/ however it might be much less expensive for you to send a sample to someone who does sludge analysis (filament identification etc) in Poland or nearby.

I also suggest checking your wasting rate, your sludge age, and your F/M ratio. It's possible that the phoshorus is being re-released (secondary release) because you're too "old". (not you- the sludge!) Grin

Hi,

thanks for You help.

we sended sample to the professional laboratory, and they confirm that is huge amont of rotifers, but the didn't say why... I don't have much expierence, so in situation like this we always do the duble check.

anyway, few days ago i checked  next sample and now everything is ok.
We change pH, and now sludge is stable, and growing properly.

thank You for our conwersation, good to know that i can count on You!!!
this forum help me a lot.
