Hello.  Should a funeral home that does embalming be required to treat their wastewater before it is discharged to a collection system?
Thank you

The simple answer is that it depends on the regulations of the authority in charge.  My take on the USEPA regulations is that it must be at least evaluated for its impact on the wastewater plant where it winds up.  All this would be covered under the pretreatment standard rules.  It would be no different from any other business/industry.

I will be evaluating two or three funeral homes in the next several weeks and what they are dumping down the drains and in what volumes will be asked.

With ever increasing population numbers is the ever increasing numbers of deaths.  This means that the volume of embalming fluids and chemicals used at funeral homes is increasing and not decreasing.

I do not anticipate having to issue a permit/control document to any of the local funeral homes, but I am leaving the door open for in the future.

Thanks Jeff!  I am going to incorporate those BMPs into my checklist/survey/inspection of local funeral homes.

Funeral homes should always ensure their waste sytem for their funeral service operation. The Federal Trade Commission recently carried out a probe into the funeral business, to see if funeral homes were complying with federal rules related to their trade. The Federal Trade Commission found proof of significant violations in an important number of funeral homes. Source for this article: High number of violations revealed in FTC probe of funeral homes. If you know some services that violates the act, report them immediately.
