Hello, I am a highschool student working on a project to create a wastewater plant in Bhutan. It will be in the city of Trashigang, and the water will be dumped out to a river. The population is about 2,000-3,000, and we were planning using the following parts. Ecoline Vessel -> Grit Chamber -> Primary Clarifier  -> Trickling Filter -> Chlorination -> Hydro-power plant -> River. It would be helpful if you could provide any comments on if this is correct, and a estimated cost for these products. Thank You,

I Think that you need professional help to design a wastewater treatment plant! While you may have proposed a treatment scheme; the details needed will probably be provided by a design firm. I'm curious, for example, about the Hydro-power plant. Is this treatment plant going to be at an elevation high enough to drive water turbines to produce electricity economically?

Has a sanitary sewer system been developed for the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)? Does Ecoline Vessel refer to an equalization tank? Have you considered waste sludge disposal? You also need a clarifier after the trickling filter.

These and other considerations are why I think that you need experienced professional assistance. I admire your ambition, but this is too complicated an undertaking for your level of experience.

Thank you very much for your reply, and I think i was misleading in my last post. This is a school project, and the development is not actually going to happen. We are just creating a proposal, and yes there is going to be another clarifier after the trickling filter. Also, the ecoline vessel is basically a screen. My partner is also looking into the sludge removal. Any advice would be helpful.

For a basic design, you need to understand the term "Population Equivalent". This determines an estimate of the flow and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (abreviated BOD) from a population served by the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). This information will allow you to calculate the size of the various treatment operations based on BOD load and flow rate.

I'm not a designer, but other Forum members are and they may be able to help you with sizing some of the other treatment units. Grit and primary settlers usually have minimum settling rates expressed by m3/(min)m2 (upward flow velocity) for their design.

Trickling Filters also have design and recirculating pump parameters for BOD removal. Final clarifier design may require determination of a satisfactory upflow velocity (m3/(min)m2 (lower than for grit or primary settling).

Chlorination usually requires a minimum detention time (min/m3/min).

The flow rate through the plant could not justify the cost of building a hydro-power plant and this should be eliminated from your flow scheme.

Now, if you look up the types of references and do the calculations, you will have a better understanding of WWTP design and this may satisfy your instructor.
