Lagoon system commissioning

We are installing an aerated lagoon system to treat dairy processing effluent for irrigation purposes.  The wastewater is currently directed (with minimal treatment) to irrigation (~400kl/day).

There is a ~3ML fully mixed, aerated lagoon, followed by two facultative (no mixing/aerating) lagoons in parallel.
Commissioning - we have a few options:
1) seed from a sewage TP;
2) fill it up and hope for the best;
3) fill up the first lagoon - and then send part of the wastewater direct to irrigation so we can build up a biomass in the aerated lagoon.

What is the best option??  And what monitoring should be undertake to confirm the lagoon system is performing?

What limits are you looking to meet on your discharge for irrigation ?
Or isn't their any to meet.
COD would be a good indicator of the waste stregth.

Hi Dairyww,
There is a fourth option which is bioaugmentation on its own or in combination with sludge from another plant. It would be best to seed from another dairy plant rather than a municipal plant. No. 2 is not really an option.

I agree with my friend CGillen; first off the 2nd option is NOT an option.

I would strongly recommend contacting any near by dairies or a WWTP already treating dairy influent to see if they would provide some seed.  If that is possible to acquire then make sure a thurough microscopy exam is performed prior to administering the seed to make sure you're NOT importing an unknown problem.

Thanks for your replies.  We are targetting a treated BOD<80mg/L.

If we were to seed the 3.6ML aerated lagoon, what amount of biomass would be suitable? Incoming BOD is around 3,000-4,000mg/L?

I think your target MLSS should be 3,000 - 3,500mg/L. Based on the capacity of the aerated lagoon you can calculate the quantity of biomass in the system. You would need 10% of this total as seed.

I would strongly support Dallas' advice to make sure the quality of any sludge you import is good. Look at the costs associated with the importation of this quantity of sludge and also look at the costs of bioaugmentation and then make your decision.
