Generally, the TDS that bacteria "eat" are quite minor because they are mainly composed of nutrients. This is the reason that TDSs are difficult to remove from wastewater. Some TDSs can be precipitated (for example calcium and magnesium as carbonates, but silver chloride is the major insoluble chloride) and some are more or less soluble based on pH. TDSs can be concentrated by RO or evaporation (perhaps even to dryness by evaporation). Anyway, if there were TDS eating bacteria; a lot WWTPs would be using them.

Dear Mr. Grunn
As you have mentioned  in your answer about precipitation of calcium & magnesium in to the carbonates, I am interested to know what is that technique. Pl. give me details.

Hi Avait,

I agree with grrun.
I assume you have a lot af calcium (probably as carbonate) in your wastewater due to the coating of paper? In this case, if you want to get rid of it, then the best way to do it is via source sanitation, i.e. preventing (as much as possible) it upstream from entering into the WWTP influent.

There is some research reducing sulfate to sulfide with bacteria that can be flashed off as H2S or precipitated as metal sulfide.  However it is not a great system from many aspects and you may be exchanging one problem for another.  If I remember correctly, it was mostly for mine waste.  As Grunn said, if there were good systems, everyone would be doing it.

Fully concur with DrHenry, especially about the last sentence.
And, H2S indeed remains something tricky...
