Need help in Fenton Reagent Solution Preparation
Apr 30th, 2012, 2:13am

Dear Gentlemen;
I need your help in preparing the Fenton Reagent to use in our wastewater treatment plant.
1) Shall I mix the ferric sulphate & the peroxide all together in single dosing tank or I should dose each chemical separately.
2) what is the quantity of each chemical to be used in a 50 liter dosing tank?
3) is there any side effect on using this technique in the aeration tank, sand filter, or carbon filter.
your advice and feedback will be highly appreciated.
Best Regards

what kind of wastewater? domestic or industrial? what are the COD concentrations? have you run jar tests?

Dear Madina;
Thank you for your reply.
the wastewater is industrial oily water.
I have done random jar test on various water samples.
Appearance change significantly but still yellow in color.
But anyway, my main question was how to prepare the FENTON REAGENT for onsite use? Shall I mix the ferric sulphate and the peroxide together in one tank or I does each separately?
Best Regards

The reagents are dosed separately NOT mixed. Add ferrous salt and slowly add the peroxide.

Dear Nasir,

You first add ferrous sulphate then add H2O2 in the same tank.. you will find the green color turned to brown..

The dosing of ferous sulphate & H2O2 depends on the COD and the content of organic compunds.. what is your COD value ?

Dear Gentlemen;
Thank you for your reply and feed back.
The wastewater is from different industries but the majority is from crude oil refining process.
The COD may reach up to 15,000 ppm.
It sounds like Fenton works better in batch process.
For the batch process:
* I have 5,000 liter tank with mixer and a dosing pump of 3 liter/ hour capacity.
* The peroxide concentration is 30%
* The ferric sulphate is powder.

Any idea to startup with?
Does Fenton works on all type of contaminants?
What is the expected hazard out of this process?

Dear Nasir,

hopefully you have efficient oil-water separation before the Fentons process.

Kind regards

Take care that Fenton will remove about 60% only from the COD..
It will generate large quantity of sludge..iron preciptation..

what is the daily volume ?
you may add a UV system to work photo fenton proccess

Dear Sobisch: this is what I am working on now, to separate as much oil as possible. (Free Oil)
Dear ihabilli: as for the quantity, it is not a continuse process. The wastewater is recieved in tankers from time to time.
UV or ozoniation I am not sure where to go.
But how to reduce further the COD, you think areation will help?
Thank you for support

using UV will reduce the use of ferrous sulphate because it will work as a closd loop to convert Fe2 to Fe3 and Fe3 to Fe2..there will be no sludge and you can reach to 95% reduction from COD.

if you need more details just leave your phone in privite message.
