aluminum residual and temperature
May 01st, 2012, 6:40am

We currently dose PAC at the water plant and was just curious about something.

We get our water from a river source and the water temperature changes constantly.  Does the dissolved aluminum residual change with water temperature?  Some people say in the winter if we have a large aluminum residual we are overdosing and in the summer if we have a large residual we are under dosing.

So I was just curious if this is true or not.

Thanks.

How are you determining the Al residual? pH and other ions may also affect the solubility of Al2(OH)3 as well as temperature.

Solubility of all salts tends to increase with increasing temperature, but obviously saturation & supersaturation will eventually be reached.

You will also find that tannins and humic substances will change based on season and temperature so your aluminum dosage needed will change.  It would be interesting to measure those and compare to aluminum and temperature.
