Info on how to address Algae Bloom in a Pond
May 03rd, 2012, 8:32pm

Where can I get info on how to address an algae bloom in a wastewater stabilization pond.  The DNR is not happy about using copper sulfate, sucking the algae is not a easy task.  I figure the contents of the pond could be mixed, but I was wondering if raising or lowering the pH could be a way.  Any one have an idea on this matter.

I have no experience, but Google "ultrasonic algae treatment" as a means of controlling algae. There are also chemicals other than copper salts; Google "algae treatment".

Lower the phosphorous levels in the incoming water to the pond and that should solve the problem.

If you can give more info on the treatment process "the forum" might be able to assist on how to remove phosphorous

Maybe something like 'Solarbee' can be a solution by providing mixing in the pond.

Thanks guys ..  The lagoon is for a small rural town that has no money.  Can't take the phosphorous out at least cost effectively.  But the mixing, I will look into.

Chromo:

Algae grow in lagoons due to long detention time, sunlight and nutrients. You can try to control algae by changing one or more of these parameters.  Detention time can be reduced by lowering the water level, particularly in the summertime. Nutrients are often very high in amount when there is significant feedback from old sludge, and sludge removal often helps.  Limiting sunlight can be done by NOT mixing and allowing algae to come to the surface (they are light seeking and move to the surface). Then try subsurface withdrawal of effluent to get below the algae layer.

Hope that this helps.

Try barley straw.  As it decomposes it releases chemical byproducts that inhibit new algae growth. The straw must be floated on the surface and should ideally be in place before the algae grows in the spring.  It will need to be replenished occasionally.  I have heard success stories of it being used in aerated lagoons.  I don't know how it would work in a stabilization pond but it is worth looking into.  The State of Illinois in the US promotes its use.

Good morning Chromo,

The cheapest option, depending on the size of your pond, would be to provide some gentle mixing with some air. It will diminish your algae concentration and provide some extra treatment and other benefits.
In this case, your most affordable option is a small custom aeration system. SolarBees are extremely pricey and you can get custom aeration systems providing a lot more mixing and aeration at a fraction of the cost. If you like the solar option, these systems can be customized to run with solar panels. It has a premium, but will still be half the cost of a SolarBee. (www.paradisenw.com --> contact the sales department)

The most efficient treatment is to cover your pond and eliminate sunlight (99% algae reduction). It can be quite a bit pricier depending on the size of your pond but it is worth investigating. There are options out there for affordable cover with no maintenance. Once you have paid for the capital cost, you have no recurring energy/chemical bills. (www.awtti.com --> contact the sales department)

If you do some search online, you will find other options but these recommendations are a good place to start.
