Monitoring stations guidelins for installation of.
May 15th, 2012, 7:19am

Dear Colleagues,
I am looking for articles dealing with the effectiveness of installing monitoring on-line sensors for water quality parameters readings, specifically Chlorine residual and turbidity (or maybe particle counts instead of turbidity).
The questions we want to find out an answer are:
1.      How many monitoring stations should be installed in a certain water supply system. What are the parameters that have to be considered in order to decide on the number of monitoring stations to be installed in a water supply system such as:
a.      number of consumers being served by the system
b.      Topography of the site
c.      Network characteristics such as percentage of the system that has loops, branched, etc.
d.      Some cost/ benefit approach

Hi J,
I believe that you may taking the wrong approach in the assessment that you are addressing. I believe that you should be approaching this on the basis of risk. i.e. What are the risks? Where are the risks? etc., then identify and apply the appropriate monitoring equipment equipment to eliminate, or minimise, the risks.

What apsect of the supply chain are you trying to monitor?  Is it the conveyance system or are you monitoring directly at the source of the water?  pH, Turb & CL are all monitoried in drinking water systems.  DO, Turb, CL, pH as well as Nitrate & Nitrites & Phosphorous are measured in Wastewater.

Pls. provide more details about the system so we can further assist you.
