Coliform Testing
May 25th, 2012, 7:39pm

Does anyone prefer a certain method of self-testing for coliform? Unfortunately, I do not have any access to lab equipment at our facilities, so testing with incubators is not an option. I was also wondering how reliable/accurate these tests are. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are Millipore "dipsticks" with a simple incubator that provide an approximate concentration for coliforms. The major drawback is that the dipsticks only sample one milliliter of fluid. However, if you are not reporting results to a regulatory authority, but only using the results for system control; then this may be a suitable operational control method. I'm not sure, but check with Hach or Millipore for details.

All regulatory monitoring for coliform is done through a contracted lab. I was interested in performing intermittent checks for process control purposes. Thanks for your advice I will check Hack and Blue Book for specifics. Again, thanks.
