I'm looking into purchasing a new/used microscope.  It will be used for wastewater and water treatment.  Observing filaments, etc. in wastewater and cyanobacteria and algae in surface water.  Phase contrast, 10x,20x,40x,100x objectives.  Any suggestions on a brand would be helpful. budget is limited to $3,000.  Thankyou

Anabaena:

$3000 will probably not be enough to get you a brand new Olympus, Nikon, nor Leica phase contrast scope.  You may be able to get a Chinese brand but you are probably better off getting a refurbished Olympus, Nikon, Leica for around that price or lower.  Dr. Richard "Dr. Bug" who participates in this Forum sells these types of scopes.  You can contact him and see if he has any available:

or Google microscope dealers near your area and see if they have them.

Hi, It’s probably too late, but I just ordered a Carl Zeiss with similar specs. They quoted me around $3500 Australian. Generally stuff is cheaper in the US than here so they might be worth a go.

good luck

You should increase your budget a little bit and go for Nikon brand. These kind of instruments are not bought daily, so must be bought with full planning and research. A good quality product will last for long when compared with other low price products.
