I am relatively new to Wastewater treatment. Are there any vaccinations anyone would recommend I receive in order to protect my self?

After doing some research, I have found a few webpages which suggest getting the following immunizations:

  • Diphtheria
    Influenza
    Hepatitis A (post-exposure)
    Hepatitis B
    Paratyphoid
    Tetanus
    Typhoid

If anyone has any recommendations or can refer me to additional webpages with more information, I would greatly appreciate it.

M Hahn,  Our municipality offers the Hepatitis B vaccine series.  Thyphoid,Diptheria,Paratyhoid cases are rare in the U.S.  Tetanus is recommended every 10 years.  Influenza is recommended in general though I personally don't get one.  In the wastewater field good personal hygiene practices should be followed.  A lot of hand washing.  I hope this helps.

The best course of action would be to get a Hepatitis B vaccination, wear personal protective equipment, maybe long sleeve clothing, and follow a strict personal hygiene routine. Correct? As long as wastewater does not enter the mouth, eyes, or open injuries, I should be fine?

You should also be aware of the tread through aerosols.

Are there any recommended respirators available to protect against aerosols?

It will probably be impractical to wear a mask all of the time when you are on the clock.  In my experience it seems that the first 6-9 months is when your body is exposed to the various germs found at the treatment plant and you will experience bouts of mild diarrhea, head colds, etc. until your immune system adjusts.  After that it normally is clear sailing as long as you observe good personal hygiene practices.

During the normal cold/flu season operators need to be disinfecting the surfaces that are touched the most by everyone: telephones, door knobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, etc.  This cuts down on transmission of germs from person to person.

The other thing is to not allow yourself to become "run-down" physically.  Get plenty of rest,
