Screen chamber dimensions of small STPs.
May 30th, 2012, 2:25pm

Hi!!

Can anyone suggest me the optimum dimensions for screen chamber for a domestic STP of small size of about 0.3 MLD and less, when I calculated as per standard formulations I have ended up with approach velocity of 3 to 6 cm/s whereas the minimum approach velocity shall be 37.5 cm/s.

The influent can be considered of standard domestic wastewater.

Is this a class project or are you designing a plant?  If designing; the chamber should be of sufficient volume to allow for maximum inflows without causing significant backup during max inflows.

What type of screening device is involved?  The 0.3MLD is that Max flow rates or avg flow rates?   If avg. what is the Max rate?

Dear Dallas,

Thanks for ur response, I am assisting a consultant he asked me to design the pretreatment units. The Avg. flow is 0.3 MLD, and the Peaking factor considered is "3".

Dear Dallas,

Bars of 10 x 50 mm size with 50 mm side being parallel to influent flow with a clear spacing of 25 mm between the bars is considered and it is a manually cleaned screen chamber.

Most of the time, the size of screens in small scale onsite systems are a matter of convenience since the design guidelines will end you up in very small channels. The screens should be functional, as well as convenient for daily operations. For a 0.3 MLD plant, you can conveniently consider a 75 cm x 100 cm channel with an inclination of 60 degrees.
