Wastewater include spent caustic
Jun 18th, 2012, 2:56pm

What is the best method to treat the waste water including spent caustic which is effluent from Hydro DeSulfurization unit?
The geographical condition is:Humidity over than 85%-max temp: 46 C
it is in an Island.
The rate is: 36 ton per 10 days
what should I investigate if I decide to make an evaporation lagoon?
Thank you.

"Treated" to produce what?  What is the quality of the raw waste as far as some basic parameters, such as total solids, TSS, sulfide or total sulfur, etc?  What quality does the effluent need to meet?

If the waste is in fact "spent caustic," what is the percent of NaOH?

If the caustic is loaded with captured sulfur compounds, such as sulfide and mercaptan, you need to be cautious about acidifying the caustic as that would generate very high levels of gaseous hydrogen sulfide and mercaptain, which are highly toxic.

The percentage of NaOH is about 4%
and the water content is about 84% and above\
the waste water should be in the range of standard of:
COD=60
BOD5=30
TSS=40
PH=6.5-8.5
and although it is effluent from hydrodesulfurization unit the sulphur content is considered but it is not determines.
what acid is allowed tobe added?
is the evaporation lagon the best choice?
and how can I determine the rate of evaporation?
thank you.

I would look into the possibility of use of a Multiple Effect Evaporator to obtain reusable Caustic solution of greater than 25% concentration. This concentrate could be reused or sold for other useful purposes.
