Concentrate dewatering
Jun 22nd, 2012, 1:18am

I was wondering what's the solution to dewater 25 m3/d concentrate, resulted from leachate treatment by reverse osmosis. Evaporation is excluded. The concentrate conposition (if needed) is below:

Conductivity : 65000 µS/cm
COD : 52000 mg/l
BOD : 18300 mg/l
SS : 2430 mg/l
Total disolved solids : 72300 mg/l
NH4+ : 7200 mg/l
As : 430 µg/l
Ba : 3,18 mg/l
Cd : <0,002 mg/l
Cr tot. : 6 mg/l
Cu : 0,19 mg/l
Mo : 0,005 mg/l
Ni : 2,27 mg/l
Pb : <0,02 mg/l
Zn : 0,11 mg/l
Hg : 24 µg/l
Sb : 232 µg/l
Se : 57 µg/l
Cl- : 7220 mg/l
F- : 7,12 mg/l
SO4 : 2230 mg/l

That's all I have. I would be interested for a coagulation/precipitation-->pressfilter solution, but I don't know if it is viable or where can I get it.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Is this a single batch of high-strength waste, or is this a regular flow volume?

We have to treat 100 m3 leachate daily and so we have daily up to 20-25 m3 concentrate. (Hope I understood correctly your question).

You did.  I missed the "per day" part of the 25 m3/day.

probably, a polymer injection with either wedge wire screen filtration which would remove filter press need. Salstas (sp?) makes a good wedge wire screen. You could also try small polymer addition and regen DE - which would capture solids down to 0.5 micron - which makes the polymer addition much less then needed for filter press.

What was the pH of your sample? You might check out:

                  http://www.vsep.com/

The TDSs seem to be high and I suspect that the pH will be less than neutral because of the high NH4+. Raising the pH above neutral may release NH3, so that may not be practical.

Coagulation/precipitation usually does not work for dissolved solids, which are very high.

An approach using biopolymers may work:
