aeration weir cleaning
Jun 22nd, 2012, 11:03am

Greetings all! Iam fairly new to wastewater treatment and I have a question. The plant operator that I work with has been here forever and is very "old school" when it comes time to clean the weirs at the end of our aeration tank before yhe clarifier he litterally gets in and pulls out the rags by hand(with gloves on) puts them in a pail and hands them up to me which I dump into the lagoon. My question is...is this the only way to do this job????it seems to me that there would be an easier, safer and more practical way to go about this.   Please advise if there are tools to acomplish this job from the platform without getting in.

LOL,,,nothing like a bit of work,,,,Sometimes the simplest method is the best. Not everything can be done by machine,,otherwise why would you need operators

Welcome to the forum & the industry.  Ahhh the sadness brought on by lack of instant gratification.   Wink   As they say: "This ain't no vidya game there boy"  alas there are times when good ole elbow grease is the best solution to the problem.

As to original question:

Yes. If the plant had a pre-treatment step involving a coarse screen. This would remove large rocks, pebbles, rags, garbage, etc.

How true ! lol
There are times when i say " Boy i wish there was an easier way "
A pre-treatment step for screening the rags would probly help. But im assuming thats not an option, so that leaves option B, getting in and getting nasty !! I know it sucks but what i try to do is not think about how nasty it is, and i ALWAYS have my gloves and safety glasses on. And of coarse a good pair of waders.

If it's a short reach you could use or modify a garden rake and scoop out the rags.  This may help from a safety standpoint, not getting into the basin.  Like the others have said, this is sometimes a dirty business.   Smiley
