Orange Juice Industrial Liquid Waste for irrigatio
Jul 19th, 2012, 11:47am

We were called into a fairly large Orange Juice producing plant and they wanted to use their treated liquid waste to irrigate.  Their main problem was that the drippers were getting clogged up permanently.  We took a sample of their Liquid waste, which passes thruough an initial Rotary Drum Filter and then pH corrected to 4 to 5 range. BOD levels acceptable.  We placed the liquid waste in a beaker and after a couple of days we had a precipitant (dark orange) at the bottom.  My guess is that this is what is obstructing the drippers.  Any idea what this might be and how to control/eliminate/emulsify?

Thank you.

Have you checked the iron concentration of the wastewater? Exposure to air at even a low pH may oxidize and precipate trivalent iron from ferrous iron in solution. Citric acid may chelate Fe++ and release it later (speculation on my part). Anyway, it might be worth checking out.

Dear OG Chile,

speculation from my part:

their waste water should contain pectins dissolved. After some aging - maybe biological - it seems to flocculate.
You may first try to remove it by lime addition or coagulation.

Kind regards

If the limes don't work, see if some lemon addition helps. Sorry, couldn't resist the wordplay this morning. Grin
