Silt Treatment
Jul 26th, 2012, 10:51pm

I'm new in this wastewater areas. Anybody can help me how is the standard way to treat silt which is collected from the storage tank? The silt is actually settle at the bottom of the tank which is needed to be cleaned after a certain period of operation. The storage tank used to store the sludge collected from the individual septic tank before the treatment of solid and the wastewater.

Is it appropriate to dump it without treatment to the landfill? My concern is they are not properly treated yet.  Sad

If this is really silt it can be washed and reused with the wash water then being treated.
Final effluent can be used for washing.

"Grit" is the description generally used to describe sand / silt that is carried into the wastewater plant in the inflow.

It is generally separated from the sewage flow in a specifically designed "grit chamber" before it enters the primary or secondary treatment stages. In the grit chamber the flow is controlled at a rate that will allow the grit to separate, but will not allow "primary solids" to settle.

Unfortunately if the grit is allow to settle in the primary tank it will be contaminated with some organic matter, (colloidal materials, rags, paper, etc). Therefore if the grit is to be recovered for reuse as "normal" grit it would have to be washed to remove the organic matter before it could be used.

Washing of grit or sand is common practice in quarry operations, and similar processes can be used to wash the grit removed from a primary settling tank. Obviously all wash water arising must be sent back to the inlet of the works for treatment.

Hi Anna,

Does the silt come from within your plant (sand filters) or from external waste coming in?

As far as disposal goes you would have to find that out yourself as it very much depends on local laws.
Do you have some sort of 'Environment Agency'? If so try their website.
