Sludge Density Formula Verification
Jul 28th, 2012, 6:22am

Dear all,

I joined this group today to seek help in verifying the following formula for Sludge Density Calculation:

Sludge Density = (1 - %Solids conc./140 + %Solids conc./100) * 1000 [kg/m3]

If %Solid conc. is 1% then Sludge Density calculates to 1003 kg/m3.

Could anyone verify this formula and explain what 140 and 100 represents in above equation?

Alternatively, if you know a formula from which I can calculate the Sludge Density using % Solids conc., could you please let me?

I will appreicate your help.
Many thanks in Advance.
Cheers.

Dear Lahoria80,

the easiest and most precise way to obtain the density of a given sludge is to measure the mass of a given sludge volume.

For calculation you need the percentage of dry solids and the density of the aqueous phase and that of the solids.
Mostly you can assume density of pure water. For the solids if purely organic (fat and oil free) a density of 1.5 may be assumed, pure inorganic maybe 2 or higher.
From the density and concentration of solids you know the mass and volume occupied by solids in a given volume. The rest is simple maths.

Kind regards
