Polymer Pump Feed Rate
Jul 29th, 2012, 8:50pm

can anyone help me figure out what should be my polymer pump feed rate for my sludge dewatering unit.

the minimum dosage required for dewatering (decanter centrifuge) is 6kg/ton, my pump capacity is 0.1-1 m3/hr.

im not sure what other information or data i need in order to calculate the polymer pump feed rate,can someone show me how the calculation is done? if you need more information just ask and ill provide it..thanks! i really appreciate all the help i get from this site Smiley

The only reliable way to determine this dose rate is to carry out trials with different polymers. You could start with bench tests and follow on with full scale tests to establish the correct rate. Even then you are likely to find that the dose rate will have to be adjusted or optimised regularly to achieve the best results as the sludge quality varies.

I agree with Tom, this is more of an art than a science. You need to get a close idea in a jar test, then try to apply to the process and find what rate works best. The better your sludge quality the less polymer you'll generally need.

best regards,

This is a complicated calculation; you need the pumping rate of the sludge, concentration of the sludge, concentration of the polymer and several conversion factors to get there.

(sludge conc. mg/L)(gal/hour sludge flow)(8.34 #/gal)/(2,000#/T)=X T of sludge/hour

Poly concentration assumed to be 100% active (substitute concentration factor and spg factor if necessary)

Max flow rate for poly=0.1 m3 /hour or about 100 L or kg/hour

6X = kg/hour = (6X) L/hour

That's the best that I can do with the information you have given.

Do you really work for the Environmental Protection Agency?
