Hello everybody!

I have the following question; any help would be greatly appreciated:

I am tackling the treatment of the waste water from a paper mill for the first time in my professional experience, through the use of an anaerobic solution.

The wastewater in question does not contain suspended solids in the form of cellulose. It has a BOD of 800mg/L, and I want to lower it to under 200mg/L.

I would suppose that since the water does not hold suspended solids, I would have to treat it with an upflow biological filter. Would that be a correct assumption?

I would also appreciate advice on the following: would it be more convenient to treat this wastewater as it is, or maybe mixed with cow manure? In case of the latter, would there be any rough estimate of a recommended proportion of manure/water? Also, what could be an appropriate hydraulic retention time and upflow velocity inside the filter?

Any tips or general advice are really appreciated, or if somebody can point me towards documentation on the subject I would be very grateful as well!

Hi Carlos

In 2007-2010, I work for pulp & paper and have two project for recycle paper anaerobic treatment and 1 pilot plant for pulp kraft condensate anaerobic system.

Issue in the paper mills is two things

1. Much solid waste incoming to the WWT system, it should be separated well in the physical - chemical treatment

2. much lime - due to raw material of paper.

.........

in my opinion the anaerobic filter will more risk for internal packing plug due to cellulose and lime. Better you use UASB or new update anaerobic technology.

For existing WWT with BOD 800 ppm, and COD 1800 ppm will get compare BOD?COD 40 - 60 %, also check the SO4 content in your system.

It is no need add other waste such as manure waste, enough from paper mill waste water.

Such as UASB design process

VOL (kg COD/m3.day) = 5 - 10

I hope the wastewater is warm and has some natural alkalinity.  Otherwise it may not be practical to treat anaerobically as you will have to heat, and alkalinity additon for buffering may be too costly.  The strength is borderline for anaerobic as yield is low and it may be difficult to run reactor without continuouisly reseeding which may prove costly.  It would be better if there were stronger streams that needed treatment.

UASB type reactors could work.  Pond treatment at lower loading couild also work.  I agree with comments on filters and a good look at COD:sulfate ratio.
