For dissolve oxygen you have to look at luminescent DO probes from HACH, Orion and other manufacturers.  Very little maintenance, rugged, reliable.

I haven't got an online unit, but my handheld Hach probe has been brilliant! Virtually no maintenance at all!

The cap lasts a fixed time (my unit tells you when it has run out - abotu a year I think) and all you do is screw a new one on, put a new 'button' (a chip with info on it) in the lead to tell the controll unit what it's characteristic are and off it goes!

I don't have any direct experience of online ammonia monitoring because I've never used them, I've heard nothing but bad things! Technology might have moved on now, but they used to require a fair amount of maintenance and down time (getting blocked with sludge particles, etc).

Regards,
argfin

YSI, Hach, and Endress & Hauser offer online optical DO sensors.  YSI and Hach offer online ammonium ISE probes.  There are also several online cabinet-style analyzers for ammonia/ammonium, e.g. WTW and Chemscan.  Fouling is an issue for all online sensors, especially ISEs.  However, they have been demonstrated to be stable for extended periods with routine maintenance.  Integrated air or water cleaning is also beneficial.

Cheers, RS
