Hi all,

We are operating one STP with Activated Sludge Process.

I would like to know exactly where I want  sample for Analyzing  Alkalinity:VFA ?

Which will be the other Sampling locations for process control ?
Thanks,

Arun

Typically you'll look at your vfa/alkalinity ratio in an anaerobic digester where it is an important control parameter. For alkalinity you want to check the influent periodically and check the effluent to ensure there is at least a residual of 60 mg/L. These are good locations at a minimum.

VFAs can also be tested in various areas of a wastewater plant or collection system as to determine any possible areas where fermentation of the waste is occuring.

Thanks for the answer.

In our plant we are not having an anaerobic digester.
Following are the Treatment  stages;

Balancing Tank - Grit removal - Anoxic Tank- Aeration Basin - Clarifier-DMF-Chlorine Contact tank - Final Effluent holding tank.

As usual from Clarifier sludge is circulated to Anoxic Tank and will be wasted to Aerobic Sludge Digester/ Holding Tank.

Which are the exact sampling points to Analyse VFA:Alakalinity for process control ?
What should be the ratio and how to control this ?

Thanks and regard,

Arun

For STP, you need to control nitrification and denitrification process.

Nitrification : 1 mg NH3-N need approx 7,14 mg alkalinity
Denitrification : 1 mg NO3 will produce 3,57 mg alkalinity

Monitor effluent residual alkalinity as least 50 or 60 ppm
