using sludge drying bed for wastewater treatment?
Mar 06th, 2013, 2:19pm

Hi Experts
I hope you all are well.
A company has started to build a treatment plant with activated sludge system for a city. Unfortunately it has not finished on time and the authorities don`t know what to do with the wastewater flowing through the pipes. just sludge drying beds are finished and they had sent the wastewater to it. What do you think about it? what do you recommend?make the sludge drying beds as wetlands? using them just like a filter or pond? what is the process.
I will be so thankful for any comment.
Best Regards
Mina

mina;

please provide details about the type of WWTP bein built.  Drying beds should have been the last thing addressed/built not the first.  Why have the influent flows been diverted to a non-existant WWTP? What is the status of the old plant?  Why isn't it still online?  There is a lot of missing info here we need before any answer can be provided.

AS for usin the dryin beds as a filter, certianly you could build a basin to house the filter if a trickling type is called for or a skid with the filter if that is what is chosen on the bed site.  If the powers at hand are hoping to just let the influent run out on the ground and "filter" itself via perccolation into the ground; NO!  That Dawg don't hunt!  Angry

A lagoon system can be implemented too but the loading would need to be verified to ensure proper treatment is attained.

Dear Dallas
An old friend called me about this problem and I told him that I would ask it in this forum.The Plant is going to build is an activated sludge system for municipal wastewater.
In fact the city had no treatment facility before (it is located in a poor area of Asia). The people had used wells for discharging domestic wastewater. Because of health problem the authorities had decided to build a treatment plant for it. Simultaneously they have done the sewers to collect the wastewater and a portion of the residential used them to send their wastewater to the WWTP. It is about 1200 m3/d with BODin=290 mg/l. This portion is now without treatment and they are going to send it to sludge drying beds. because of little knowledge about its construction (they didn`t have a good consultant), they just had built sludge drying beds at first, I know it`s strange but it has happened and there is no cure!
This is fault of the authorities. I don`t want to be involved in it, I just want to solve the problem.
Now my friend wants to reduce the effect of this wastewater to the environment until the whole plant is being built. I don`t have enough knowledge and experience to help then I asked for your help.
Could you please tell me what is the best solution for this problem?

Thanks
Mina

Hi Mina;

 Certainly sounds like a bad situation.  Well, I would strongly suggest you contact Smith and Loveless (no affiliation) they make an outstanding package plant (Titan MBR) that would serve your friends needs very well in the interim while the powers at hand settle on what they will do to set up a permanent WWTP.
