Plant/Process Description:
The Mount Martha Sewage Treatment Plant was built in 1978 and serves the townships of Mornington, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha, Somerville, Pearcedale and Baxter. Wastewater from houses, factories and office buildings is delivered to the plant by a network of sewers and pumping stations.

When the wastewater arrives at the Plant, it is a mixture of solid and liquid wastes, and water. By far the largest component is water.

If the wastewater was left to decompose naturally the process would be very slow and could smell and create a health hazard.

Quite simply, the Plant accelerates the natural decomposition process and at the same time controls and renders the wastewater inoffensive, stable and safe for release back into the environment, either as irrigation water or via ocean outfall.

It is important to understand that bacteria, grown on site are used to carry out the decomposition process. Like humans, bacteria require a home, food and oxygen to survive. The Treatment Plant provides the bacteria with an ideal environment to exist in large numbers. There are four types of treatment available: primary, secondary, disinfection and solids treatment.

Treated Wastewater

Some 12.5 mega litres (12,500,000 litres) of wastewater is treated at the Plant each day, which is the equivalent to a flow generated by 55,000 people. The Plant uses a process known as Activated sludge treatment’ in the processing of wastewater. Once treated, all wastewater is chlorinated prior to recycling for irrigation or released back into the environment via ocean outfall.

Treated wastewater from the plant is used to irrigate:

-A tree plantation

-Vineyards

-On-site lawns
