Plant/Process Description:
The Bonnybrook Water Treatment Plant serves over 600,000 citizens processing approximately 376,000 cubic metres of sewage a day. The ultraviolet-light disinfection facility, one of the largest in the world, disinfects the Bonnybrook plant effluent using UV light. This process eliminates the toxic risks involved with the traditional method of chlorination and dechlorination. The biological BNR process removes phosphorus and nitrogen from Calgary's wastewater by using naturally-occurring micro-organisms instead of chemicals, eliminating the cost of chemicals and their discharge into the Bow River.

Shepard Sludge Lagoons

Digested sludge, often called biosolids, is pumped from the anaerobic digesters of the Bonnybrook and Fish Creek wastewater Treatment plants to the Shepard Sludge Lagoons, located in southeast Calgary. The sludge lagoons consist of six summer cells, two winter cells, and two separated-liquid (supernatant) cells. They encompass a 20-hectare area and can store 743,000 cubic metres. The water at the top of the lagoons is pumped back to the Headworks at the treatment plant to once again move through the treatment process.

CALGRO

This program involves taking biosolids, the final product, from the lagoons to the farmers' fields. After about six weeks in the lagoons, the biosolids can be used as organic fertilizer and soil conditioner.
