Plant/Process Description:
McMurdo Station is operated by Raytheon Polar
Services for the National Science Foundation in
Antarctica--at the bottom of the world. The water
plant desalinates 29 F seawater with three
reverse osmosis (RO)units and is capable of
producing 120,000 gpd. The plant was build in
1985 with multi-stage flash evaporators. These
were hugely problematic and so the plant changed
to ROs in 1994.
The WWTP was built in 2003 and is an extended
aeration, activated sludge plant. Influent
amounts to 20,000 gpd during the 7 months of
winter when the station is closed to all outside
flights and there is a station population of only
200 people, to 70,000 gpd during the summer
(October - February) when the population of
scientists and support personnel swell to 1,100
or more.
