Plant/Process Description:
Located next to Finley Golf Course on Mason Farm
Road, the OWASA Wastewater Treatment Plant was
built in 1948 by its former owner, UNC-Chapel
Hill. The plant can treat up to 12 million
gallons of wastewater daily before safely
discharging it into Morgan Creek.
Treatment process includes OWASA's
internationally patented Nutrified Sludge
Process, which biologically removes phosphorus
and other pollutants from wastewater. Solid
materials left over from the wastewater treatment
process -- known as sludge -- are treated
themselves as "biosolids," used for fertilization
on approved pasture and other land applications
around town.
