Plant/Process Description:
The City of Batavia owns and operates the
Treatment Facility and the community?s collection
system. The staff receives continual training to
keep current with new technologies and improved
operating procedures. The City of Batavia
currently has 18 sewage pump stations located
throughout the community. The Wastewater
Treatment Staff is responsible for the operation
and maintenance of these facilities. The
Water/Sewer Department is responsible for the
operation and maintenance of approximately 100
miles of underground sanitary sewer piping
throughout the community.
The Excess Flow Facility consists of a First
Flush Tank and an Excess Flow Clarifier. The City
of Batavia has approximately 3.5 miles of
combined sewers throughout the community. Because
of this, the treatment plant can experience
unusually high flows during a rain event. The
Excess Flow Facility acts as a safeguard to plant
systems by giving the operator control over the
amount of flow entering the treatment
plant.
Headworks Facility: The headworks facility is
where the wastewater enters the treatment plant.
It's purpose is to remove inorganic material that
cannot be "broken down" in the biological
treatment process.
Primary Clarifiers: The objective of the Primary
Clarifiers is to remove readily settleable
solidsolids and floating material such as fats,
oils and greases, for the purpose of reducing
suspended solids that would otherwise enter the
treatment process.
Aeration / Nitrification Basins: Multistage
centrifugal blowers deliver low-pressure air to
provide oxygen as well as mixing to the
microorganisms in the wastewater. The aeration
basins are aerated using porous membrane
diffusers positioned uniformly above the basin
floors. The goal of this process is to convert
dissolved or suspended organic material into a
form more readily separated from the water being
treated.
Secondary Clarifiers: Secondary clarifiers are
used to separate suspended particles in the mixed
liquor that are heavier than water, by
gravitational settling (sedimentation). This
process removes microorganisms/organic material
from the water before it is discharged into the
receiving stream.
Ultraviolet Disinfection: Ultra Violet light
disinfects wastewater by altering the genetic
(DNA) in cells so that bacteria, viruses and
other microorganisms can no longer
reproduce.
Anaerobic Digesters: The aim of the Anaerobic
Digesters is to stabilize raw sludge by reducing
its volatile content and pathogen count. This
process also reduces the odor of the sludge. The
anaerobic digesters use microbes that oxidize
organic material to form carbon dioxide, water,
and ammonia in the absence of free
oxygen.
Sludge Handling Facility: The purpose of the
Sludge Handling Facility is to process the
digested sludge into a more manageable product.
The facility accomplishes this through a series
of processes and equipment that aid in the
removal of water from the sludge; thereby
reducing it's volume. Sludge volume reduction is
important, as it significantly lowers energy and
disposal costs.
