Plant/Process Description:
Central San's state-of-the-art secondary treatment facility can handle up to 55 million gallons per day (mgd) of dry weather flow and 240 mgd of wet weather flow. In an effort to find new and improved ways of treating wastewater, Central San recently replaced its chlorine disinfection system with ultraviolet disinfection, making us the largest wastewater plant in the nation using this process. Also we now produce our own electricity through a cogeneration system that saves about $1 million per year in electric utility costs.

Central San has been involved in water recycling since the early 1970s. We currently provide high quality recycled water to customers located adjacent to our treatment plant and in Pleasant Hill.

Central San provides landscape irrigation water that meets all the requirements of the State Department of Health Services and the California Regional Water Quality Control Board for unrestricted landscape irrigation. Approved uses include irrigation at schools, parks, playgrounds, median strips and playing fields, as well as dust control and industrial uses.

Recycling water means less water is diverted from the Delta environment. Recycled water is a valuable resource, especially during drought years when water for landscape irrigation is less available because of water rationing.
