Plant/Process Description:
This industrial water treatment plant is a demin plant for a power house boiler of generating capacity 100 MW.
Background
Tata Steel is India’s largest private steel producer. Tata Steel Complex at Jamshedpur is 5 million tons capacity integrated steel plant. Tata Steel is the world’s lowest cost producer of steel products. They are also very proud to announce they consume lowest water per ton of steel produced.
In spite of being the lowest cost producer and lowest water consumer, Tata Steel was plagued with high cost of DM water production.
Situation
Tata Steel expanded steel production from 5.0 to 6.0 million tons. Hence they proposed to install Power House #5. This power plant needed high purity DM water and based on their experience Tata Steel decided to outsource the DM water production facility and floated a global tender inviting water treatment companies.
System Details
The plant required to produce 175 m3/hr of DM water all through the year with out interruptions. The interruptions, if any will cause the supplier severe penalties. The feed water is clarified water from near by river which had colloidal silica. The treated water quality is as below:
