Plant/Process Description:
Reading Sewage Treatment Works (STW) was
officially opened on 18th January 2005 by
Environment Minister, Elliot Morley. It treats
wastewater for a population of 284,000 people in
and around the town of Reading.
In total, more than 1,400 people were involved in
designing and building the works between 1998 and
2005. It is one of the most technically advanced
plants of its kind in the UK, and cost a total of
around 80 million Pounds.
Reading STW is the first completely new works
build by Thames Water since our privatisation in
1989. It is a showcase of our leading-edge
environmental technology, including the 20-metre
high egg-shaped digesters, which form the eye-
catching centre piece of the site.
The works replaced Manor Farm STW, which served
the town of Reading from 1873 until late
2004.
