Plant/Process Description:
In Bistrita the first wastewater treatment line
(110 l/s capacity) was established in 1970. In
1980 the second line (250 l/s capacity) was
established. Since 2002 the wastewater treatment
plant works with three lines, the third line
having a 560 l/s capacity.
Preliminary treatment, common for all lines,
consists of one mechanical Geiger bar screen,
three Nogherath bar screens and one degritter
with greases separator.
Primary treatment is achieved in one circular
sedimentation tank (1st line), three rectangular
sedimentation tanks (2nd line) and two circular
sedimentation tanks (3rd line).
Secondary treatment consists of a conventional
activated sludge process, secondary clarification
with activated sludge return and wasting. 1st
line has an aeration tank with three compartments
and a circular secondary clarifier. 2nd line has
three aeration tanks with two compartments and
three rectangular secondary clarifiers. 3rd line
has one aeration tank with four compartments and
two circular secondary clarifier. The porous
diffusers are fited out with Messner diffuser
membrane.
Sludge conditioning: Primary and wasted activated
sludge are homogenized and submited to
centrifugal thickening. Then the thickened sludge
is fermented in three anaerobic mesophilic
digesters. The methane gas produced by digesters
is deposited in four gasometers and it is used
for plant buildings and sludge process heating.
Dewatering is achieved with an Alfa-Laval
equipment using an organic polymer. Dewatered
sludge is sent on the city’s waste platform.
River outfall: Treated effluent is discharged
through an diffuser system into the Bistrita
river adjacent to the plant site.
Plant staffing: The plant is staffed by six civil
engineers, ten certified operators, three
electricians, a chemist engineer, a biologist,
six laboratory technicians and ten skilled
workers.
Process control: Because the system is not
computer controlled, we take all data from the
analyses made in plant flows by the laboratory
technicians and the biologist (phisico-chemical
parameters tested are: BOD, COD, suspensions, DO,
pH, ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate
nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, inorganic
matter, sulphates, chloride, cyanide, phenols).
Still plant has a computing system including
elementary process informations. Bistrita's
facility is unusual in that although it was
designed for a wastewater inflow about 2000 l/s
the real inflows are only 300-400 l/s.
