Plant/Process Description:
The BWSS STP was designed to address the impending environmental issue which might arise as a result of the continuous uphill trend of tourist arrival in the famous Island of Boracay, which was once declared as the most beautiful beach in the world. The increase in development, coupled by the porous soil formation triggered the need for a wastewater treatment facility, since the earlier settlers used to rely on septic tanks as a mode of discharge and treating their wastewater.

The plant was designed to handle 2600 cu.m. per day of wastewater, discharged from commercial and residential establishments in the island of Boracay, Philippines.

The treatment is a biological process through activated sludge. The plant was not designed as a combined system, considering technicalities as well as actual site conditions.

The system components are: grit chamber, oxidation ditch, clarifers, and a disinfection tank and an 840 m marine outfall pipe. Thus treated wastewater conforming with the standards set by the Department of Natural Resources is discharged at the Sibuyan Sea which is the backside portion of the island.
