Plant/Process Description:
The wastewater treatment
facilities are owned and operated by the City of
Richland. The system presently serves a
population of approximately 40,000.
The Richland
Wastewater Treatment Plant built in 1985 is an 12
million gallons per day plug flow activated
sludge plant with approximately 225 miles of
sewer line. Which are maintained by the City's
operational and maintenance staff.
Currently,
the average daily flow through the plant is 5.4
million gallons per day. As the population of the
City grows beyond existing treatment
capabilities, built-in design flexibility allows
for the construction of additional facilities
which will double the treatment capacity of the
plant.
The City of Richland is part of the Tri-
Cities urban area which is an important
transportation and trade center for the Columbia
Basin. The major economic influences providing
the area's employment base are the Hanford Atomic
Energy Reservation and irrigation dependent
agriculture.
The Richland wastewater treatment
plant is classified as a Class IV plant using the
classification system listed in WAC 173-230-140.
The wastewater treatment plant treats mainly
domestic sewage. The treatment plant receives
approximately 0.7 million gallons per day of
industrial flow from identified sources. This
accounts for approximately 12% of the wastewater
flow.
Industrial and commercial establishments
discharging into the City's collection system
include: printers, photographic processors,
dental and medical facilities, a university
facility, two industrial laundry, dry cleaners,
chemical/biological testing and research
laboratories, radiator repair and auto body
shops, a potato starch processor, a federal
contractor, pesticide applicators, and a nuclear
fuel rod manufacturer. The industries are
monitored and regulated by the Cities
pretreatment program.
