Plant/Process Description:
The Gander Water Treatment Plant is a true
milestone for Fay Environmental Canada Limited.
This being our first design and build plant in
Canada.
The raw water is pumped from Gander Lake where
the existing Raw Water Pumps are located. The
water is pumped through an existing band screen
before entering the pumps at the station. This
water then flows through a Raw Water Rising Main
to the treatment plant which is centrally
located in the town approximately 2 km from
Gander Lake.
Once the raw water reaches the plant it is
distributed from a Raw Water header through four
main process streams, each independent stream
can process up to 150 m3 /hr/ or 660 usgpm. The
maximum plant capacity is 14.4 MLD or 3.8
million US Gallons per day.
The pre-filtration for each stream is provided
by pressure sand filtration using graded
filtration sand as its media. The water then
flows to the second stage of treatment which is
a stage of Ozone Oxidation.
Ozone is generated on site using a low frequency
Corona discharge type water-cooled ozone
generator complete with motive water pumps, and
gas injectors. Screw type air compressor sets in
acoustic enclosures provide the feed gas for the
system which also incorporates on site Oxygen
generation. Excess Ozone is scrubbed through a
Thermal Catalytic destructorAfter the water
leaves the ozone reactor vessel it enters a
multimedia Pressure Filter This filter is
identical in construction to the inlet pre-
filters and constitutes the third stage of
treatment. Once the water passes through the
multimedia filter it then enters the final and
fourth stage of treatment an activated carbon
filter.
All of the process units used in the system are
of Stainless Steel construction as is the
interconnecting pipework.
The operation of the system is fully automated
with respect to production and shut down as are
the filter washing sequences. This level of
control and automation is provided by a fully
integrated bespoke SCADA system which also
monitors the performance of the system with
respect to quality variables such as Turbidity,
ORP & pH.The plant is stopped and started on
demand according to the level in the existing
treated water service reservoir located in the
town. The operation of the Lake Pumping station,
the Treatment Plant and the reservoir with
associated booster pumps is controlled and
monitored from the central operator work station
in the treatment plant control room. This
control system can also be accessed via internet
link from any other location thereby minimizing
nuisance call out visits.
The treatment system in its entirety comprising
the main process, all pipework and valves,
Pumps, machinery and Compressors, all ancillary
systems including the instrumentation and
control and automation was provided by Fay
Environmental Limited. As the designer, process
contractor and General Contractor Fay
Environmental provides a unique and economically
cost effective service to the needs of the
Canadian drinking water sector by marshalling
all required components and disciplines under
one contract and responsibility.
