Plant/Process Description:
The 30,000m³/day brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) plant at Spring Garden, St Michael, was built by Ionics Freshwater Ltd (an Ionics / Williams Industries JVC) under a build-own-operate contract awarded by the Barbados Water Authority (BWA).

A complete brackish water desalination system for delivering 30,000 cubic meters per day of potable water. Water from this plant passes all of the internationally accepted biological and other tests for water quality and the plant can supply drinking water for up to 20% of the island's population.

The heart of the plant is the RO system. Reverse Osmosis is a widely accepted membrane-based technology for separating the incoming feedwater in a desalted stream and a concentrated stream by application of pressure. A combination of advanced membranes operating at a low pressure and a single array to reduce the plant's overall energy requirements and provide high-quality drinking water.

In the desalination system, up to 75% of the pressurized feedwater is recovered as freshwater. The remaining portion of the high-pressure feedwater concentrate is passed through an energy-recovery turbine to minimize electrical consumption before ti is returned to the sea via deep well injection.
