Plant/Process Description:
The SCWWTP was opened in March of 2006 and directly serves the community of Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The plant treats an average daily flow of 5-6 ML of municipal wastewater.

It is comprised of a headworks building for screening and grit removal, two bioreactors, two secondary clarifiers, and a dewatering building. The SCWWTP uses a Modified Johannesburg process to remove both Total Phosphorus and Nitrogen as Ammonia. Saskatchewan Environment has set strict limits on the effluent quality because of the relatively small receiving stream which is the Swift Current Creek.

The plant was constructed over the course of 2 years and was done so to replace the existing disposal method of effluent irrigation. Disinfection at the SCWWTP is carried out by ultra violet light prior to discharge.

The SCWWTP was designed as a 'chemical' free plant, although it does have equipment in place for the addition of sodium hypochlorite, liquid alum, and sodium acetate for the supplementation of volitile acids. It was determined in the pre- design stage that primary clarification was not going to be a neccesity, so there are no primary's or digesters on site.

Phosphorus removal relies mainly on the naturally occurring acids in the wastewater. Dewatering takes place via centrifuge and conveyor and is the one stage where chemicals (polymer) are used on a daily basis. Disposal of the dewatered sludge is simply by trucking the dried material to the local landfill. Plans are currently in the works to use the dried sludge as a composted material to cover up the soon-to-be out of service landfill.
