Plant/Process Description:
Catoma, named after a Native American tribe that
used to live in this area, is an activated
sludge wastewater treatment plant. In this
process, bacteria are suspended in the
wastewater and held there by mixing, continually
feeding on the waste material.
By providing the necessary oxygen to the
bacteria, optimum waste removal is achieved. In
1978, the Catoma Water Pollution Control Plant
replaced the Catoma Creek Sewage Treatment
Plant, which was abandoned and dismantled. Its
service area includes South and Southwest
Montgomery.
