Plant/Process Description:
Let me give you a little bit of history about
wastewater treatment in Orem. Before 1958, a
large catch basin, similar to a septic tank, was
all that was used to treat wastewater in the
city. It was located somewhere in the vicinity of
the I-15 freeway, directly west of UVSC. With a
growing population, the first modern treatment
facility was built and went online in 1958. The
facility was small and was located all by itself
in the fields southwest of town.
Today, the city owns and operates a modern, state-
of-the-art water reclamation facility. This
facility has two major components. One is the
sewer line collection system. It consists of six
sewer lift stations located at various sites
within the city as well as pipes in almost every
street. These pipes range in size from 6 inches
in diameter in the northeast part of town, where
the flow is low, to 48 inches in diameter when
the pipes reach the treatment facility.
The other component is the treatment plant
itself. At the treatment plant, pollutants are
removed from the wastewater using naturally
occurring biological processes that have been
concentrated to treat large volumes of water.
This combined system, which collects and treats
between 8 and 10 million gallons of wastewater
each day, allows the citizens and businesses of
Orem to discharge wastewater into a closed
system. The water is then cleaned and reclaimed
to a standard set by the Utah State Division of
Water Quality before it is finally discharged
into Utah Lake.
We are proud of the fact that the water which
leaves Orem City’s Water Reclamation Facility is
of the highest quality and always exceeds the
treatment standards. Though it is not clean
enough to drink, it is clean enough for other
public uses.
