Spokane, WA -- Nags Head, North Carolina had a problem common to most resort destinations; the change in population due to the tourist influx raised havoc on the smooth operation of their wastewater treatment plant.
Nags Head offers a plethora of tourist fun, with golfing, beaches, fishing piers, amusement parks, and ocean side resorts, it's no wonder people flock there to spend their leisure time. The name itself is inquisitive, for an explanation, click on Nags Head.
With the people comes the higher loading to the wastewater treatment plant creating operations and treatment challenges. The wastewater plant operator, Utilities, Inc. contacted Blue Water to see if the Salsnes pre-treatment filter could solve its problems.
After evaluating operating data, historical performance, and lease vs. buy opportunities, Utilities Inc. purchased a Salsnes SF-2000 in December of 2009. Construction commenced and was completed in rapid fashion with the Salsnes Filter operational in April 2010.
Designed to treat a peak flow of 0.8 MGD, Salsnes has exceeded the design expectations. TSS and BOD have been reduced significantly. Since the Salsnes operates on a “mat-induced effective pore size” principal, it is also functioning as an ultra fine screen with a resultant opening of less than 1/10 of a millimeter.
