Ballast Water Treatment System Patented

FORT WASHINGTON, PA -- The BalPure ballast water treatment system generates biocides; analyzes and meters the residual level of both biocides and neutralizing agents prior to discharge or de-ballast operations; and logs the performance of the overall ballast water treatment system for presentation to authorities.

With international, national, state and local environmental agencies worldwide taking action to regulate the discharge of ballast water arriving in ships coming from overseas ports, the BalPure system has proven to be effective and economical in high- and low-capacity systems to treat ballast water with no adverse effects on the environment.

The BalPure system is installed with minimal invasiveness into existing vessel pumping and piping systems, making it very compatible with existing vessel configurations. Third-party testing of the BalPure system has confirmed effluent quality that meets proposed International Maritime Organization ballast water standards.

The introduction of aquatic nuisance species into coastal marine and estuarine waters comes from a variety of sources. However, because of the large volumes and frequency of use, ballast water is currently the most frequently cited method for the worldwide transference of non-indigenous organisms.

International agencies such as the International Maritime Organization, United States Coast Guard and U.S. federal and state governments are combating the problem by mandating ballast water exchange in the open ocean or utilizing ballast water treatment systems.
